Open edX Platform Atlasv1.0

Learner Experiences

The in-course and discovery surfaces where learners engage with content, track progress, and earn credentials.

6 feature areas

Pathways Experience

2012

The Pathways Experience covers how learners discover, browse, and navigate courses and programs — including the learner home (dashboard), catalog, and program pages. It's the pre-course and between-course experience: enrollment, re-enrollment, program progress, and course discovery.

Mobile Learning

Mobile Learning covers the native iOS and Android applications for the Open edX platform. The apps allow learners to access course content, watch videos, complete assessments, and view their progress from mobile devices.

Discussion & Community

Discussion & Community covers the in-course discussion forums where learners and instructors interact — creating threads, asking questions, upvoting answers, and building peer learning communities. It also includes staff moderation tools and configuration of discussion providers.

Identity & Accounts

2012

Identity & Accounts covers learner registration, login, authentication (including SSO), account settings, and learner profiles. This is the gateway to the platform — every learner must create and maintain an account to access courses.

Credentials & Certificates

Credentials & Certificates covers the issuance, display, and verification of course completion certificates and program credentials. When a learner completes a course (meeting grade thresholds), the platform generates a certificate; completing a program of courses generates a program credential.

Course Experience

2012

The Course Experience is the primary in-course interface for enrolled learners. It includes courseware navigation (sections, subsections, units), content rendering (video, text, problems), assessment interaction, and progress tracking. This is the most time-intensive surface area in Open edX — where learners spend the majority of their platform time.
